Rock Climbing

For rock climbers Eskdale couldn't offer more. There are outcrops where beginners can have their first scrambles and there are plenty of low level outcrops that can be climbed on all year round by more experienced climbers. High above the Great Moss is Esk Buttress and from upper Eskdale you can get to the East Buttress of Scafell; the premier Lakeland mountain crag. You will be well served by either the FRCC Eskdale Guide or the new FRCC Lake District Rock collected climbs. For more information look on their website

If you need someone to take you out climbing or abseiling, or if you want your kids to experience the thrills and spills of rock climbing adventure, then John Grey is the local qualified outdoor instructor who knows the valley well. You can call him on 019467 23236, but beware, you might get addicted.

There is also plenty of bouldering in the valley, with a fantastic area of granite boulders 5 minutes from the George IV pub, as well as a major group of boulders called the Sampson Stones in Upper Eskdale. See the new Rockfax Lakes Bouldering Guide for details or look on or check out
